One night I was dog sitting and I was in the mood for a drink. I looked around to see what I had for liquor and flavors. I was a bit limited for flavors but narrowed it down to orange and cranberry juice. I started searching the internet for a cocktail I could make with those juices that did not require lemon or lime and I landed on this recipe for a cranberry orange margarita and oh my god.
Other than tequila and the orange liquor I would not consider this cocktail a margarita. The original recipe calls for a salted rim but I don’t know if it really pairs well. It’s very easy to drink so take it easy, or don’t, I’m not going to judge (I’m on my third cocktail writing this).
Some recipe notes: while fresh is always best, I don’t always find it practical. Take the orange juice for example. It’s so much easier to just buy the juice rather than juice an orange. Garnishes just make the cocktail pretty, they are not necessary. You can use any tequila, silver was recommended. I’ve used regular and coconut.
Yield: 1 cocktail
Ingredients:
2 oz tequila
1/2 oz orange liquor
1/2 oz orange juice
2 1/2 oz cranberry juice (reduced sugar if you can find it)
1 tsp maple syrup, or to taste
Ice
Optional garnish: fresh cranberries, sprig of thyme, slice of orange
For the rim:
Cinnamon sugar
Directions:
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Give it a shake. If doing the sugar rim, dip the rim of your glass in orange juice, then the cinnamon sugar. If doing a sugar rim, wet the rim of your glass with orange juice (or use a slice of orange and run it along the rim) then dip in cinnamon sugar. I find a plate works best. Place a few ice cubes in your glass and strain your cocktail into your glass over the ice. Garnish as desired. Enjoy cold.
